SmartAgro Research Cluster have developed an app to curb cattle rustling and put a halt to the incessant clashes between herders and host communities. Known as NimTrack, the app is capable of tracking cattle movement and providing a timely and visual presentation of the most current locations of animals.
NimTrack is the brainchild of scientists from the Department of Computer Science, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State and researchers from other Nigerian universities. It was launched during a one-day sensitization workshop, which held at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, with the theme: “Intelligent animal tracking and pastoral management.” Giving an explication of the app, the researchers in a statement, identified that it was born out of the need to have an ICT-based agricultural sector and create a synergy between both sectors. “NimTrack is an intelligent animal tracking and management device. It tracks and also enables farmers to set a geofence for the animals as they seek for pasture and if any one of them goes out of the range that was set, the farmer receives an alert in this respect,” It read. Principal Investigator of NimTrack, Dr. Oluwasefunmi Arogundade of the Department of Computer Science, FUNAAB, who in her presentation highlighted a new approach to pastoral management, said that the app provided interaction between the herders and their tracked animals. She said, “NimTrack keeps up with the received location and provides a timely and visual presentation of the most current locations of their animals; previous locations of the tracked animals can also be viewed by the farmers.”
